Grey Box Art Gallery
Grey Box Art Gallery is an independent art studio, gallery and music venue in Ann Arbor. Established in the backyard garage of local artist Charles Hooper, Grey Box Art Gallery is fully independent and open to the public. Fully versatile, the space is available for artists as a workspace, as well as a venue for hosting art exhibitions and live music performances. The walls of the Grey Box Art Gallery are brought to life with vibrant works created by local artists. There are also instruments, including a piano and organ, available for musicians to craft their gorgeous tunes. The idea behind Grey Box is fully independent and Do-It-Yourself (DIY) in nature. Rob Stephenson played an instrumental role in establishing the working studio and venue with his partner, Charles Hooper. As an Artist and Fine Art Photographer, Stephenson has hosted various exhibitions of his own works of art at the location.
What is a Garage Art Gallery?
A Garage Art Gallery, or Backyard Gallery, is pretty true to its name. It’s an art gallery hosted in a garage or backyard. But there’s so much more than what’s on the surface; especially to artist, photographer and Grey Box Art Gallery Co-Founder Rob Stephenson. A true testament to Do-It-Yourself (DIY) art, these spaces foster and encourage an energy of artistic expression and creativity. Stephenson and his partner Charles Hooper work to ensure that the artists are able to display their creations on their own terms, in a way that is representative to them, individually. Acting as both Creator and Curator, artists are able to share their creations as they intended, without having to worry about a third party disrupting the creative process. These spaces are particularly important to smaller artists who aren’t located in major cities. The venue makes creating, viewing and experiencing art all the more accessible. Stephenson is proud to be a part of Grey Box Art Gallery, as a Fine Art Photographer, Artist and DIY Extraordinaire himself.
