Well, we may still be enduring a Winter Wonderland up here in New York City. But that doesn’t mean that we can’t keep warm by the heat of these Outdoor Art Galleries! Rob Stephenson, Co-Founder of the Grey Box Gallery (a garage / backyard art gallery), shares his top two picks for outdoor galleries around NYC this Winter 2025:
Rose III in Zuccotti Park
Rose III by German artist Isa Genzken is a 26-foot-tall, 1,000 pound rose sculpture ‘planted’ in Zuccotti Park. The installation was unveiled on the seventh anniversary of the Occupy Wall Street takeover and seeks to symbolize the protest through poised beauty that cannot be ignored. This piece is one of Genzken’s many giant flowers, which have become a recurring symbol of the artist’s work. She created and installed similar sculptures between 2010 to 2013 on the New Museum’s Facade, as well as the Doris C. Freedman Plaza in Central Park in 2016.
Bird’s-Eye View in Rockefeller Park
This unique art installation uses augmented reality to draw the viewer into a birdwatcher’s paradise at the Battery Park City riverfront of Rockefeller Park. Rob Stephenson is a fan of how this installation fuses modern technology of augmented reality (AR) to create a truly spectacular art experience. The Bird’s-Eye View artwork by Shuli Sade features 30 species of birds who seek refuge near Manhattan’s waterways every year. Sade’s original watercolor paintings of these majestic creatures have been integrated into the installation for viewing by use of Adobe Aero app and a smartphone camera. Just scan one of the 70 QR codes found on the 14 signs along the riverfront to enjoy these paintings and learn more about local birds and their habitats.
